5" HR Loch Class

Here we have a particularly lovely and rare model. A 5" gauge Highland Railway Loch Class, 'Loch Insch'. Finely built by the late Tony Allcock, the designer of the well respected 5" LMS Jubilee design. Tony built this as one of a pair to his own design drawn from the works drawings, and the pair pre-date the later and simpler published design by Nevil Evans. Tony kept one of the models and this one was sold to be run. It's been in our personal collection here at SW for many years, and we can confirm it's a superb and capable machine.

As you might imagine, we've 'tinkered' here too, so we made patterns to reflect the convoluted spaces available behind and inside the splashers, and cast lead to neatly tuck away behind them, so this is now a heavy loco. The tender has been modified with internal support structure as well as rubber blocked axle boxes and foot rests so you can drive it if you wish on the ground level sitting on the tender, as per the films below.

The boiler is silver soldered copper and comes with fresh Hydraulic and steam tests, and the loco is fitted with a pair of injectors and a hand pump in the tender. Lubrication is mechanical and under the front running boards. The steam brake works nicely and all in all it's a lovely, capable and beautifully controllable loco to drive.

As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get!

We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go.  So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
