5" LNER K1

Here we have a 5" gauge LNER K1 built we think to the Clarkson design.  She's a slide valve engine as most of the Clarkson designs rather than piston valve like the originals, but whilst there's a degree of prototypical accuracy sacrificed there, the slide valves certainly make the loco sound and perform very well.  Plus of course they 'wear in' rather than 'wear out'!

Mechanically this is a nicely made model, and certainly has the feel of a good runner about it.  There's not a great deal of mechanical wear and tear in the valve gear or bottom end that we can see, and we've spoken to friends of the builder who confirm that it's free steaming and a good engine to drive.  The boiler is of course silver soldered copper and comes with a fresh 4 year hydraulic test as well as a fresh annual steam test.  Lubrication is mechanical and fed from the large reservoir on the running board.  There is an injector of course, as well as an axle pump for the water, as well as a hand pump in the tender for if things all get out of hand!

As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get!

We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go.  So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
