Here we have our very own 5" Riddles 9F! No,.... before you ask,..... it's not, nor has it ever been anywhere near the modelworks factory!
Finished in 1995, and constructed to the very nicely detailed Les Warnett drawings. The model has been built to a very good standard and comes complete with the silver medal, and the Kennion trophy it gained at the 1999 and 2000 Model engineering exhibitions.
We've done quite a bit of work over the last year or so, including a new regulator, re-worked lubricators, modifications to the reverser, balancing the driving wheels, reducing the pony truck loading, modifications to the valves, various (removable) modifications to ride on the tender for GL5 fun. So now she is fully sorted and ready to play. There are twin, reliable injectors, a tender hand pump, steam operated drain cocks, Dave Noble gauge glasses, the usual Hewson detail additions. She is fitted with steam brakes, their being two cylinders, one front and one rear, and of course there's the handbrake on the tender.
As you would expect, this is a very powerful model, that puts it's power down extremely well. It steams very freely, and it would take a very heavy train to make it anything other than a relaxing drive. We have pulled just shy of 50 scale wagons up a 1 in 40 without too much difficulty, which is a train that we couldn't physically push ourselves without considerable straining and ballast pushing! It was certainly a very good test for the integrity of the first wagon coupled next to the tender!!
The pictures show her immediately after she ran at Gilling this last month, so still in her oily clothes. The paintwork, although not pristine, is still in very good condition. The transfers on the tender and cabside could be better having never been sealed on, but they are only a few pounds to re-apply, and for that matter, if you would prefer a different number 9F then we would be happy to re-number her for you. From the lamp brackets, she is currently in Western region guise, so ready to satisfy all your S & D desires!
